A Place of Healing

March 20, 2021

Today is “roof day” – the day we are having the shingles put on the healing hut. Now that we’re under roof, I feel so much closer to the magic day when you and I can begin working together in this wonderful space.

I’ve been thinking about the significance of a roof. A roof is protection – from rain, snow, hail and the blazing summer sun. Without a roof, you can visit, of course, and brave the elements. But with a roof, you have a place. Even though it is not quite finished, the healing hut has become a Place of Healing.

The foreman of the roofing crew was a gentle soul, tall and strong from a lifetime of work, a little grey at the temples and near retirement age. Once he got his crew going, he stepped back. He noticed the path through the woods that leads to the building’s entrance. Curious, he followed it in reverse. Then he noticed other paths we’ve made through other parts of the woods, and he followed those too.

“I like the path that leads you in to the hut,” he told me.

“Yes,” I replied. “I think a short walk through the trees will help clients leave their everyday mindset behind and step into the magic of healing.”

“It’ll do that for sure,” agreed the foreman, who most likely has never been to a healing Place before. And the look in his eyes made me wonder if maybe I’ll see him there again.
